Wildcats Trounce Competition at NU Duals; Win All Eight Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's fencing team hosted the NU Duals II at Patten Gym Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats made light work of all eight opponents, winning every match in convincing fashion. NU defeated its opponents by a total of 182-7, with the foil team going a perfect 72-0.

NU defeated Michigan State 27-0, Purdue 27-0, Michigan 23-4, Chicago 25-2, Wisconsin 26-1, Bowling Green 27-0, Oberlin 27-0 and Minnesota 27-0.

In Northwestern's first match of the day vs. Michigan State, Christina and Natalie Wang were each 3-0 as all three squads were a perfect 9-0.

NU's second match was a 27-0 pouncing of Purdue. Freshman Adrienne Shon was a perfect 3-0.

Round three was a 23-4 win over the University of Michigan. Senior epeeist Emily Pasternak was 3-0 in the dual.

In the lone intrastate dual of the day, NU defeated the University of Chicago 25-2. Sophomore Gina Annunziato was 3-0.

Northwestern triumphed over its neighbor to the north, Wisconsin, 26-2 in round five of the day. Junior Mai Vu was a perfect 3-0.

In their final three duals of the day, NU blanked Bowling Green, Oberlin and Minnesota 27-0. Against BGSU, junior foilist Jessica Florendo was a perfect 3-0, while Natalie Wang went 3-0 vs. Oberlin. Shon matched her 3-0 performance vs. Purdue with another 3-0 blanking of Minnesota.

With the eight wins, the Wildcats are now 35-4 on the season. Those 35 wins match its highest total since 1999, when NU went 35-1 and won the Midwest Conference Championship.

Northwestern's women's fencing team is next in action when they travel to Hartford, Conn., for the USFA National Junior Olympics. Day 1 of the three-day meet begins Friday, February 17.
