Wildcats Enjoy Successful Remenyik Open

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's fencing team had some impressive showings at the Remenyik Open hosted this weekend at NU's Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC). Eleven different Wildcats finished in the top-10 of their respective weapons.

In the open women's foil, the Wildcats took three of the top five spots led by senior Jessica Florendo's second-place finish. Florendo was 6-0 in pool play. It is the second-straight year Florendo has finished in second place. Junior Natalie Wang tied for third with freshman Karolyn Szot. Wang and Szot were both 5-0 in pool play.

Freshman Meredith Baskies impressed everyone with her eighth-place showing, while classmate Ameesha Sampat finished 29th. Newcomers Leah Carlson and Jennifer Heller finished 37th & 38th, respectively.

In women's open sabre, senior Mai Vu was NU's top finisher, tying for third place. Vu was 5-0 in pool play. Freshman Whitney White placed seventh, while junior Gina Annunziato placed eighth. Both White and Annunziato were 3-2 in pool play. Sophomore Adrienne Shon rounded out the Wildcats' top-10 finishers tied for 10th. She was 4-1 in pool play. Senior Sophie Eustis placed 13th and freshman Alice Weinert tied for 28th.

The women's open epée was dominated by Northwestern as well. Freshman Christa French tied for third, while classmates (and sister) Joanna Niklinska and Kayley French each finished in the top-10 as well. They both tied for sixth.

Freshmen Sarah Henning and senior Sarah Gravlee finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Sophomore Megan Ross ended her day in 15th place. Senior Sara Pecherek placed 26th.

In the men's open foil division, sophomore Sam Nemecek put up an impressive showing, placing 15th out of 80 competitors. Nemecek was 4-1 in pool play. Szot finished 41st and Baskies 55th.

Associate head coach Ed Kaihatsu placed second in the open men's sabre competition.
