Wildcats Head to Ohio

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will see a large part of the state of Ohio this weekend as they take on Ohio State at 11 a.m. on Sunday and Kent State at 1 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats enter the home stretch of the 2006 season, with two more home games and one away contest at Michigan before the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 3-5 in Ann Arbor.
Last Time Out...
Iowa scored three minutes into the match and held Northwestern's offense to just four shots en route to a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Alex Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) scored NU's (6-7, 1-2) only goal of the game.
The Hawkeyes set the tone early when they recorded the first goal three minutes into the match on a short shot by Caitlin McCurdy.
Northwestern responded when sophomore Annie Bosslet (Granite City, Ill./Villa Duchesne (Mo.)) found Quinn on a short shot at the 17:01 mark to notch the score at one. Quinn's goal was her fifth on the season.
Iowa added another goal less than a minute before the half to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Hawkeye defense held NU shotless in the second half while adding an insurance goal midway through the second half.
Iowa earned eight corners to the Wildcats' three.
Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) and Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) also launched shots for the 'Cats. Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) recorded four saves.
Scouting the Buckeyes
The Buckeyes enter this the contest with a 9-2 record and are ranked seventh in this week's NFHCA poll. OSU is 2-1 in conference action, defeating Iowa and Penn State by a score of 4-3 (the PSU game was in overtime) and losing to Indiana, 2-1. Ohio State's defense is led by Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, Saskia Mueller, who actually scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Nittany Lions. Yesenia Luces and Michaela O'Malley lead the Bucks in scoring, recording 11 and 10 goals, respectively. Ohio State has dominated opponents in the circle, taking 111 corners to foes' 59 and scoring 48 goals compared to opponents' 18.
The Series with the Ohio State
Northwestern leads the all-time series, 26-21-1, but the Wildcats will be looking for their first win against the Buckeyes since 1995.
Scouting the Golden Flashes
The Golden Flashes enter this weekend with a 5-9 record, including a 2-3 mark in Mid-American action. Kent State's goalkeeper Kara Copeland was named the Mid-American Defensive Player of the Week as she collected 21 saves in two games against Central Michigan and Ohio University last weekend. The Flashes have already played three Big Ten teams, losing to Iowa (5-1), Michigan (3-2 OT), and defeating Michigan State (3-2). Kate Perry leads Kent in goals and assists, with eight and five, respectively.
The Series with Kent State
The series between the 'Cats and Golden Flashes is notched at 2-2-0. Northwestern has won the past two showdowns, defeating Kent 4-2 in 2004 and 2-1 in 2003.
