Northwestern Drops Season Opener to California, 191-102

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern welcomed California -- the fourth-place team from the 2006 NCAA Championships -- to the Norris Aquatics Center Thursday night to open the 2006-07 schedule, and both squads turned in impressive early-season performances in a 191-102 win for the Golden Bears.
Northwestern opens the dual-meet season with an 0-1 record, while California is 1-0. The Golden Bears broke a pair of Norris pool records during the meet.
Northwestern freshman Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) made a big debut in her first collegiate meet, gradually pulling away to win the 1000 free with a time of 10:03.28. Classmate Mary Beth Francis (San Diego, Calif./Mission Viejo) took third with a 10:11.90.
Racing against California's 2004 Olympian Dana Vollmer in the 200 free, junior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) swam to a second-place finish with a 1:50.88. Vollmer crushed the pool record by nearly two full seconds, turning in a 1:47.29 to best Hupman's Norris Center mark of 1:49.05 set in 2004.
Cal swept the 100 back and the 100 breast, with Golden Bear Jessica Hardy swimming a 1:01.02 in the 100 breast to best the pool record of 1:01.94 set by NU All-American Amy Balcerzak in 2000.
NU junior Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) and the Golden Bear's Rachel Ridgeway turned in a fantastic duel in the 200 fly. Ridgeway edged ahead in the final 25 yards to defeat Braun's 2:03.01 by just .14 seconds.
In the 50 free, another Wildcat freshman had an impressive showing in her first collegiate event. Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) came in second with a 23.78, besting teammate Hupman who finished third with a 23.87. Emily Silver of Cal won the event with a 23.62.
After the meet's first break, Hupman came out on top of a star-studded field in the 100 free, swimming an NCAA 'B' standard 50.73 to win the event. The event featured three student-athletes -- Hupman and a pair of Golden Bears -- who will be teammates on the U.S. squad at the World University Games in 2007. Proving the Wildcats now have an impressive 1-2 punch in the sprint free events, Wong came in third with a 51.20 to beat WUG team member Erin Reilly from Cal.
California again swept the back and breast events, swimming the top three times at both 200 distances.
In the 500 free, Shishkoff came in third as the top finisher for the Wildcats, turning in a 4:59.32 performance.
Braun then turned the tables on the Bears, holding off a hard-charging Reilly to win the 100 fly with a time of 55.71. Following the second break, Francis came back from fifth place after the backstroke leg to finish third in the 400 IM with a 4:30.12.
The Wildcats closed out the meet with a second-place performance in the 400 free relay, finishing in 3:27.30. Wong swam a 51.11 leadoff leg to top the time she turned in during the 100 free event.
California swept both diving events.
Northwestern returns to action at 4 p.m. CT Friday, Oct. 27, at Indiana.
