EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) was selected by FC Dallas in the second round of the 2006 MLS Supplemental Draft Thursday. Napper started all but one match of his college career and was a two-year captain for the Wildcats. He becomes the first player in Northwestern men's soccer history to be selected in an MLS draft and returns to his hometown to begin his professional career.

"I am very excited for Brad to see his hard work pay off," Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. "People originally thought Brad was crazy to come to Northwestern because the program had very little history of success (upon his arrival in 2002). His faith in the program paid off in the form of being a part of an NCAA Tournament team, two-time All-Big Ten performer and three-time Academic All Big Ten selection.

The all-conference defender was chosen by the Hoops with the sixth pick of the second round during Thursday's Supplemental Draft.

"Brad being drafted shows everyone that not only can Northwestern provide you with a great education, but also serve as a gateway to a professional career."

Napper ended his career as one of the most dominant players in school and conference history. As a mainstay on the Wildcat backline, Napper led the NU defense to 22 shutouts during his tenure.

In addition to his defensive prowess, Napper displayed his offensive ability season after season. He finished his Northwestern career with 29 points on 13 goals and three assists. His 13 goals ranks first in Big Ten history for goals scored by a defensive player.

Napper was twice named first team All-Big Ten in addition to garnering second and third team NSCAA All-Midwest Region honors.

Napper will join an FC Dallas team that posted a 13-10-9 record last season en route to an appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
