EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team did not drop a single match during a 7-0 win over DePaul Wednesday at the Combe Tennis Center. The Wildcats swept the doubles competition before going undefeated in singles play for their second shutout of the season.

The Wildcats began the dual by dominating doubles play.

Northwestern's No. 3 doubles team of Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) and Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) was the first to finish. Dwyer and Evstratenkov sprinted to a 5-2 lead before topping DePaul's team of Will Wang and Jack Komar 8-4.

Northwestern's No. 1 doubles team of Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) then clinched the doubles point for the 'Cats with an 8-4 victory over the Blue Demons' Eric Huffman and Austin Doerner. The two teams battled back and forth to a 4-4 score before Christian and Schaechterle turned on the heat. The two rattled off four-consecutive points, capped by a Schaechterle ace to win the match.

At No. 2 doubles, Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/South Florida) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) topped DePaul's George Wang and Gabe Inchauste 8-4, to give Northwestern the sweep at doubles.

Northwestern carried the momentum right into singles play.

Dwyer was the first Wildcat to finish during singles play, beating DePaul's Eric Huffman 6-0, 6-3. Dwyer ran off with the match from the beginning and improved his season record to 9-4 with the win.

With Northwestern leading 2-0, Lock came through with a straight-set win in his first appearance at No. 1 singles this season. Lock battled DePaul's Gabe Inchauste to a 6-4, 6-3 win, giving Northwestern a 3-0 lead. Lock evened his record at 4-4 with the win.

Gomez, who was making his first appearance at No. 3 singles this year, clinched the match for Northwestern by topping the Blue Demons' Jack Komar 6-3, 6-3. Gomez now stands at 4-4 on the year.

Schaechterle struck next for Northwestern, recording a 6-4, 6-3 win over Danny Wilson at the No. 5 singles. Schaechterle is now 8-4 this season.

At No. 6, Evstratenkov beat DePaul's Austin Doerner 6-4, 7-6 (3), while Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) made it 7-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over George Wang. With the win, Tempke stays tied with Dwyer with a team-high nine wins.

"We did a good job of coming out in singles and putting the match away early," head coach Paul Torricelli said. "This was a team effort and it gives us a lot of momentum heading into this weekend."

With the win, Northwestern improves to 3-1 on the year. The Wildcats return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host No. 26 Notre Dame.
