New Haven, Conn. -- Northwestern's field hockey team improved its record to 2-1 on the season after Meghan Small (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) had a two-goal performance to help lift the `Cats past Yale, 2-1 on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Northwestern started the game on the offensive, outshooting the Bulldogs 6-3 during the first fifteen minutes of the game. It would be Yale, however, who would strike first.
The Bulldogs were awarded a penalty corner with 8:39 left in the first half. Yale's Cat Lindroth received the pass from Heather Orrico, and scored the first goal of the game, giving Yale a 1-0 lead.
Just like in Saturday's match against Fairfield, however, the `Cats would not allow giving up the first goal to shake their confidence. The Wildcats' resilience paid off just three minutes later, as Small scored her first goal with 5:35 left to play in the first half. The two teams would go into the break all knotted up at one.
Nearly 10 minutes into the second period , Small was able to slap her second goal of the game by Yale keeper Elizabeth Friedlander. Friedlander did tally 15 saves during the match, but Small was able to get two past her, all the Wildcats would need.
The rest of the second half was mostly a defensive stalemate. NU goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) made five saves in the period, while Friedlander had six.
With 1:51 to play, Friedlander came out in favor of the Bulldogs' Emily Palilonis as a kicking back, but Yale was unable to generate any more offense.
For the match, Northwestern outshot the Bulldogs 27-20. Small and Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis/University School of Milwaukee) each had seven, while freshman forward Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) tallied six. Amanda Care (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) and Noreen Stewart (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) each notched an assist in the win.
The `Cats will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9, taking on Central Michigan at home.
