FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Northwestern's field hockey team needed an extra session to win a shootout against Fairfield University, 4-3, Saturday, Sept. 3. Megan Sieberg (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) knocked home the match winner just four minutes into the overtime period, improving Northwestern's record to 1-1.
The Wildcats were down early as Fairfield's Kelly Rath was able to score off of a rebound and send it past Wildcats' goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary), to give the Stags a 1-0 lead.
Despite falling behind early in the game, Northwestern's offense turned up the intensity and rallied to score three goals in a matter of five minutes.
The fireworks display began when Wildcats' freshman forward Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass/Greenfield) notched her first collegiate goal, sending a rebound past the Fairfield keeper to tie the score at one.
Less than a minutes later, Putnam doubled her fun as she converted a penalty corner pass from junior midfielder Meghan Small (Bethlahem, Pa./Moravian Academy), giving the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage.
At 10:25, Northwestern senior Ellen Schlafly (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) scored her first goal of the season, an unassisted strike that gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
Northwestern's lead was not safe, however, as Fairfield's Allison Mays scored only 2:28 later, pulling the Stags within one.
Mays' goal capped off a remarkable scoring barrage from both teams. It was the fourth goal of the game within a seven-minute span, and was the last score for almost 57 minutes.
Northwestern held on to its 3-2 lead with under a minute to play, but Rath scored her second goal of the match, setting up the overtime period.
Four minutes into the overtime, however, Sieberg scored her first goal on the season off of a Schlafly pass at the top of the circle, giving Northwestern the 4-3 overtime victory.
Northwestern's offense rattled off 18 shots during the match, led by Small, with seven, and Putnam with four.
Nyberg played all 70:00 minutes in the cage for the Wildcats, tallying 7 saves.
Northwestern will be in action again at 11 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 4, to take on the Yale Bulldogs in New Haven, Conn.
