EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team dropped its final exhibition match of the season Saturday, Aug. 27, to the UW-Milwaukee Panthers, 3-1.
Despite outshooting the Panthers 15-7, Northwestern was unable to convert all but one of its tries during the match.
UW-Milwaukee scored first a little less than 15 minutes into the match. The Panthers' Dale Weiler received the ball on the right side of the box, in front of NU goalkeeper Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven). As the defense collapsed, he found Steve Sperl on the left side, who drove it past a diving Pines to make it 1-0 Panthers.
UW-Milwaukee struck again at 44:15. The Panthers' Troy Spielmann, only minutes after coming off the bench, was able to get behind the Wilcats' defense. He scored from 10 yards out, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers kept the momentum after halftime. At 47:45 Neil Dombrowski took a Josh Curry centering pass and scored, giving UW-Milwaukee a three-goal lead.
A very physical, defensive stalemate ensued as the Wildcats fought to stay in the game. The Wildcats had five shots-on-goal in the second half, including a header by Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) that missed high by just inches.
Northwestern got on the board following a yellow card on the Panthers' Grant Furnstrum. At 73:00, senior Eric Brin (Westlake, Calif./Westlake) took the penalty kick from the top of the box and stuck it just within the right post, making it a 3-1 game. This would be the final score for the match.
The Wildcats will play their first regulation match of the season at 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, against Western Kentucky at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex. This match is part of the annual Lakeside Classic.
