IZMIR, Turkey -- In the first international competition of her career, sophomore Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) earned a gold medal with the U.S. 4x100 freestyle relay Friday during the opening day of swimming at the World University Games.

Hupman swam the leadoff leg of the relay, putting the U.S. in front from the start with a time of 56.26. The American squad cruised to a 2.62 second win over New Zealand.

"We had a goal of setting the meet record going into this race," Hupman told USAswimming.org following the race. "We all knew what we could do, so we went for it.

"This meet has been unlike any other meet I've competed in. Everything is exciting and charged with energy and emotion. It's been really fun to interact with all of the other countries."

The U.S. team won two golds and a silver medal Thursday, the first medals for the entire American delegation at the 14 sport Games.

NU men's swimmers Mike Alexandrov and Matt Grevers are also competiting at the World University Games, with Alexandrov recording a fourth-place finish in the 200 meter breast Thursday. Grevers' first events take place Sunday.
