EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 1-ranked Northwestern women's lacrosse team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 16-3, in the first round of the NCAA Championship Thursday afternoon at the Thomas Athletic Complex. The Wildcats now move on to host Princeton Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinal round -- the Tigers defeated Maryland, 16-8.

To say that Princeton provides a daunting task in the second round would be an understatement. The Tigers won the NCAA title in 2002 and 2003, and then finished runner-up to Virginia last year.

Aly Josephs led the way for the Wildcats Thursday against the Mount, scoring seven goals which was a career high and one shy of the modern-era record (set last year by Kristen Kjellman). Four of Josephs' goals were unassisted.

Lindsey Munday, the nation's leading scorer, kept up her torrid play, scoring twice and adding four assists -- all in the first half. Kjellman scored three times, while Jenny Bush had two goals and Courtney Flynn recorded two points.

Northwestern got on the board just 1:24 into the game when Josephs scored her first unassisted tally, and then 10 seconds later it was 2-0 when Josephs scored off a feed from Munday. Kjellman and Munday hooked up for the next two goals to make it 4-0, before Mount St. Mary's scored when Kirby Day fnished an Erin LaMotte feed.

Josephs got that goal back less than a minute later, however, and that started an eight-goal run that bridged into the second half. Josephs had four goals during that stretch, while Munday had both of hers.

Day broke the streak with 22:33 left in the game, but then Josephs scored her final goal of the day and then Bush notched both of hers to make the score 15-2. Katie Falatach and Flynn scored for each team to close things out.

Naomi Campano Radio had 11 saves for the Mountaineers, while Ashley Gersuk and Abby Bangser once again split time in the goal -- Gersuk gave up one goal and had two saves in 36 minutes, while Bangser had two stops and gave up two goals.
