EVANSTON, Ill. -- On April 29th, Northwestern field hockey took part in the Girls in the Game program for the second consecutive year, working with more than 100 participants to introduce the sport of field hockey to many kids who had never before picked up a stick.
GIG is a non-profit organization that promotes fitness and athletics for young girls. This year, the Wildcats traveled to the Alexander Graham Bell School on Chicago's north side to bring their love of athletics to the 3rd-through-8th graders at the school.
"It is great to expose young girls to our sport," NU head coach Kelly McCollum said. "Field hockey continues to grow in this region and it is very important for Northwestern student-athletes to get out into the community. Our players have worked hard to earn the opportunities they have at Northwestern and they are wonderful role models for these young girls. The kids were thrilled to be able to interact with our team."
The Bell School is comprised of a very diverse student body, which includes a Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. Several of the participants worked with interpreters to help them learn the game.
