EVANSTON, Ill. - With No. 2 Duke coming to town Sunday afternoon, the top-ranked Northwestern women's lacrosse team had every reason to be looking past unranked Stanford Friday at the Thomas Athletic Complex. And after 12 minutes, those fears were being realized, as the normally quick-starting Wildcats held just a 2-1 lead.
Lindsey Munday drained an unassisted goal at the 12:44 mark, though, and that set the Wildcats off toward an easy 16-3 victory.
"I was happy to see us get it going there," said NU head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "When you are able to open up a lead like that, it can be deflating to your opponent. We were looking for a quick start today."
The win allowed NU to remain unbeaten at 11-0, and set the stage for Sunday's showdown with the Blue Devils. Faceoff at the Thomas Athletic Complex is set for 1 p.m.
Munday's second goal of the day triggered a stunning display of offense by the Wildcats, who netted eight goals in a span of 7:54 to effectively put this game away. Munday, Laura Glassanos and Aly Josephs scored twice in the run, while Kristen Kjellman and Kate Darmody also found the back of the net.
Stanford (6-5) was able to salvage the last goal of the half when Megan McClain converted a free-position shot with 3:39 left, and the teams went to the break with Northwestern leading, 10-2.
Lindsay Finocchiaro scored off a Munday feed just 1:40 into the second half, but that goal was matched by Stanford's Sarah Bach. NU's Courtney Flynn scored unassisted just 55 seconds after Bach's goal, and then nearly nine minutes went by before Darmody scored on the free-position.
At that point, Northwestern took the air out of the ball, working on its keepaway game and getting its substitutes some quality minutes. Annie Elliott and Jenny Bush sandwiched their first goals of the game around Darmody's third of the day in the game's final eight minutes.
Munday ended the game with three goals and three assists, while Glassanos had three goals and an assist and Darmody had three goals. Nine different players scored for the 'Cats Friday.
"I was happy to see our balance," said Amonte Hiller. "We had some players from the defensive end get involved and work on going to goal. We are going to need more of that as the season progresses -- you want to be able to count on a number of different players as scorers."
Northwestern outshot the Cardinal 24-6, and perhaps most impressively collected 16 of the game's 21 draws. Kjellman had six draw controls, while Courtney Koester added three. Courtney's twin sister Ashley Koester had five caused turnovers.
