Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader; Win Game Two 10-6

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Northwestern scored runs in six of game two's seven innings, winning 10-6, and sweeping Sunday's doubleheader. Catcher Pat McMahon supplied the big hit, racking his fourth home run, helping NU improve to 11-9 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten.
Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) and freshman Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) each laced RBI singles in the first inning, giving NU a 2-0 lead.
IU mirrored NU in the first, plating two runs on one hit. A hit batsman and two walks, coupled with a Wildcat error, contributed to the two runs.
Every time Northwestern found the scoring column, it seemed Indiana would too. Luckily for the Wildcats, starting pitcher Ryan Myers found a groove after the second inning, propelling NU to the win. Myers earned his third victory of the season, pitching six and two-third innings.
Shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the top of the third inning, scoring Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) from third. Phelps reached on a single.
Like they seem to have done all day, Indiana tied the score at 3-3 after a leadoff double came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
NU took a 5-3 lead, scoring single runs in fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, freshman Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) hit an RBI single, scoring classmate Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) from second. Owens singled and stole second setting up Newman's hit.
In the fifth, McMahon scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a single. He moved to second on a passed ball and to third when Mann grounded out.
McMahon continued to sizzle at the plate, knocking his fourth home run of the season and second of the series over the right field wall. His three-run bomb scored Newman and Ori. Newman reached base with a single and Ori was issued the one-out intentional walk. Right fielder Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) also had an RBI single in the inning.
Myers held off Indiana in the scoring column until they scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. IU plated three runs on three hits and took advantage of a two-out Wildcat error.
After six complete innings Northwestern led 9-6.
NU added an insurance run in the seventh. Owens scored and circled the bases on three Hoosier errors.
With his pitch count already over 110 pitches, Myers got the first two outs of the seventh inning before getting into trouble. After two singles, sophomore Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) relieved Myers. Schwartz needed just five pitches to get the out, earning his first collegiate save. In the Wildcats' two games, the bullpen gave up only one run in six and two-third innings.
On the day, NU pounded Hoosier pitching for 22 runs on 29 hits.
McMahon ended the day 6-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBI.
The team is hitting .361 in its three games in Bloomington.
The Wildcats and Hoosiers will play the series finale, tomorrow, at 2 p.m.
