Northwestern Headed to NCAA Regional Championships Again

EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the fifth time in the last six years, Northwestern's women's golf team has a chance to compete for the NCAA Division I national championship.
The Wildcats, ranked 44th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, are one of 63 teams in this year's championships, which begin Thursday, May 5. Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 5-7 to determine the national championships field. Northwestern is one of 21 teams competing in the West Regional, which is being hosted by New Mexico State University (NMSU Golf Course) in Las Cruces, N.M.
The top eight teams and top two individuals from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 17-20 in Sunriver, Ore. Northwestern is seeded 17th among the 21 West Region teams.
"Last year's NCAA experience should help our young team," says NU coach Chris Regenberg. "Our goal has been to earn a trip to nationals and we're three strong rounds away from doing that.
"All three regionals have outstanding fields, but we are capable of shooting some low scores and competing for one of the top eight berths. We're looking forward to the challenge."
Northwestern is one of six East or Central Region teams playing in the West Regional. The top West teams include No. 2 UCLA, No. 5 Georgia, No. 7 Oklahoma State and No. 9 Tennessee.
The Wildcats are the only Big Ten team represented in the West. Four other Big Ten squads -- Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue -- earned NCAA regional berths.
The Wildcats, led by senior captain Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), have one senior, three sophomores and two freshmen in its regular lineup.
Northwestern made NCAA appearances in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. The 2000 team advanced to the NCAA National Championships.
