EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern finished its weekend road trip with a 6-1 win at Purdue Sunday. The Wildcats took the doubles point and won the top-five singles positions to improve to 10-11 overall, 5-4 in the Big Ten.
By splitting its weekend competition, Northwestern is making a strong push down the homestretch of the regular season, having won four of its last five.
The `Cats began the day with a pair of wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. After dropping a close one yesterday at Illinois, seniors Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) got back on track with an 8-6 win. Hanus had injured himself against the Illini, but he and Perrin gutted out their seventh win of the season together.
Sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and senior Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) broke a 1-1 tie by squeezing out a 9-8 (4) win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. The duo is now 4-3 in duals and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
Because of Hanus's injury, Head Coach Paul Torricelli held the senior out of singles competition, bumping everyone else in the lineup up one notch.
Sophomore Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germanry/Lohbrugge) took the reins at the top position for the first time this season and set the tone early for the `Cats by finishing first with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Koziell. Tempke's 7-2 mark in conference action is second-best on Northwestern.
Perrin assumed the not-so-unfamiliar No. 2 slot, where he has competed 10 times this year. There, he recorded his 10th overall victory of the season by grinding out a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-5 win.
At the No. 3 and 4 positions, sophomores Lock and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) extended their singles winning streaks to six and four, respectively. Lock continued to be lights out for the `Cats, improving his team-leading record to 23-8 overall, 17-4 dual and 8-1 in the Big Ten. Christian has also feasted on conference competition lately, as his straight-set win improved his Big Ten record to 6-3 -- third-best on the team.
Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) dropped his first set at the No. 5 slot, 6-4. But the junior rallied to win the next two sets and notch his first conference win of the season.
Northwestern returns home to close regular season competition at Noon Saturday, April 23, against Ohio State.
