EVANSTON, Ill. - In frigid conditions at the Thomas Athletic Complex, the hottest thing was the third-ranked Northwestern women's lacrosse team's offense.

The Wildcats scored just 11 seconds into Saturday's home opener and never looked back, earning a 13-6 win over 20th-ranked Pennsylvania. The win improved NU to 6-0, the best start for the program in the modern era (since 2002).

Christy Finch got the Northwestern offense rolling, taking the opening draw and sprinting through the Quaker defense to score after the game was just 11 seconds old. Just more than two minutes later, the Wildcats doubled their lead when Laura Glassanos finished a free-position attempt.

Emily Cochran notched a free-position goal to get the Quakers on the board, but Sarah Albrecht used a nice individual effort to make the score 3-1. Cochran's second goal was answered by three consecutive by the Wildcats, as Aly Josephs sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around Albrecht's second of the day.

Rachael Manson scored twice for Penn before halftime, around NU goals from Annie Elliott and Kristen Boege, and the teams went to the break with Northwestern us 8-4.

Manson scored her third of the day for the Quakers just 2:12 into the second half, off an assist from Ali Ryan, but more than 10 minutes would pass before either team scored again -- and it was NU that found the net, as All-America Kristen Kjellman took an assist from Lindsey Munday for an easy goal. Just 42 seconds later, Glassanos made good on her second free-position shot to give NU a 10-5 lead.

Penn's last goal came from Manson with 13:59 to play, but Kjellman scored two more times and Courtney Flynn notched her only tally of the game to close out the scoring. Munday assisted all three of those goals, finishing the game with four dimes.

In goal, senior Ashley Gersuk was only called upon to make five saves; however, she became the program's all-time leader in that category when she made her second of the day. Gersuk now has 456 for her career.

NU is off until next Sunday, when the Wildcats will host California at the Thomas Athletic Complex. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
