EVANSTON, Ill. - 16th-ranked Northwestern got off to a fast start Sunday against 14th-ranked Michigan State, winning the first five weight classes and jumping to a 15-0 lead. But the Spartans claimed wins in the final five matches to come back and win 20-15.
With the Spartans holding a 17-15 lead heading into the final match at 157 lbs., Matt McCarty barely edged freshman Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy), 2-1, to put his team ahead 20-15 for the overall win.
Northwestern falls to 9-3 and 2-3 in the Big Ten, while the Spartans improve to 7-2-1 overall with a 4-0-1 mark in the Big Ten.
With junior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) out of the lineup for the `Cats, Head Coach Tim Cysewski bumped a few of his wrestlers up a weight class to try and compensate for the loss of the all-American Candidate.
The strategy worked well early on, as senior Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Marin McNamara) won 3-2 in the opening match at 165 lbs. With the match tied at 1-1 in the third period, Kimberlin scored a late takedown and held on for the victory, 3-2.
Northwestern went up 6-0, when No. 3 Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) defeated No. 17 R.J. Boudro, 6-2, in the 174-pound bout, to remain undefeated on the season.
No. 16 Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) got out to a fast start against No. 18 Joe Williams at 184lbs. and held off a late charge to win 10-5.
Similar to the 165-pound match, No. 18 Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) scored a late takedown on MSU's Jeff Clemens at 197 lbs. and claimed the decision, 6-5.
Northwestern continued to roll as freshman Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) dropped Max Lossen in 285-pound by a score of 6-3, putting the `Cats ahead 15-0.
Michigan State got on the board at 125 lbs., as No. 3 Nick Simmons took a forfeit, narrowing the NU lead to 15-6. Simmons remains undefeated on the season at 22-0.
The Spartans claimed the lead with a victory at 149 lbs., going ahead 17-15. They then sealed the win with a decision victory at 157 lbs.
