DENVER, Colo. - No. 3 Northwestern defeated Denver, 20-9, in women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at All City Stadium.
Much like yesterday's game against Oregon, the Wildcats (3-0) used a fast start to take control early. After Christy Finch's first collegiate goal (just 26 second into the game) was matched by Denver's Kate Broderick, the 'Cats reeled off seven unanswered goals over a span of 18 minutes. Laura Glassanos and Kristen Boege scored twice in the run.
"The goal for us was to get out and set the tempo," said NU head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "We worked all week on some things we did not do so well at North Carolina last weekend, and I was excited because I saw some improvement in those areas."
Denver (1-3) broke the string when Crystal Jack scored an unassisted goal with 7:53 left in the first half, but NU ran off three more goals -- one from Annie Elliott, two from Glassanos. That made the score 11-2, and Northwestern never looked back.
Glassanos capped off a spectacular offensive weekend, scoring five goals and dishing out an assist. Lindsey Munday had three goals and an assist, while Boege also had three goals. In all, 11 different Wildcat players scored for the second day in a row.
"We did not really hit our stride offensively last weekend at North Carolina," said Amonte Hiller. "We wanted to improve on our opportunities and how we finished this weekend. I felt like we were much more in sync, and the whole bench got involved."
Ashley Gersuk played in goal all the way Sunday, recording five saves.
One of the best things about Northwestern's two wins this weekend was that everyone got to see quality minutes. Everyone who traveled and was healthy played in both games.
"We traveled a lot of women this weekend, and I was happy to see the bench players were hungry when we put them into the game," said Amonte Hiller. "It is a hard dynamic, because you want your players to go hard the whole game despite the score. Bench players want to make their mark when they get in there."
The third-ranked Wildcats are back in action Thursday afternoon, taking on regional rival Notre Dame in the first meeting between the teams since last year's NCAA Tournament first-round game. The contest is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. (3:30 Central) in South Bend.
