EVANSTON, Ill. - Sixth-ranked Northwestern claimed third place at the Midwest Conference Championships Saturday, hosted by Notre Dame.

It was the third-consecutive third-place finish for the 'Cats, who claimed the bronze medal in 2003 and 2004, as well.

The Fighting Irish took first place, while Ohio State took second.

Northwestern's epee team earned second place, while the foil and sabre squads each claimed third.

After a first round bye, the foil team beat Wayne State 5-0. In the semifinals, they fell to Ohio State, 5-3, in closely fought bouts. The foilists then blanked Michigan, 5-0, for third.

The epee team also received a first round bye. They would beat Michigan, 5-2, and Ohio State, 5-3 before falling to Wayne State in the gold medal match.

The sabre team defeated Oberlin, 5-0, in their first-round bout. They then beat Detroit, 5-3, advancing to the semifinals. There, Notre Dame defeated the 'Cats, 5-2, but Northwestern rebounded in the bronze medal match to beat Michigan, 5-0.
