EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) won his fourth-straight singles match Saturday, helping 39th-ranked Northwestern defeat Wisconsin, 5-2, in both schools' conference opener.

The Wildcats move to 5-2 on the year, 1-0 in the Big Ten, while the Badgers drop to 2-3 and 0-1 in the conference.

Christian's win improved his record to 4-3 after he had dropped his first three contests of the season.

Sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) also continued to dominate in singles. He ran his record to 6-1 -- a team-best -- with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lachezar Kasarov at the No. 4 position. It was yet another straight-set victory for Lock, who has only dropped one set this season.

The 'Cats claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) improved to 5-2 on the season with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot.

Senior Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) and sophomore Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) won 8-5 at the top position, evening their season record to 2-2.

Tempke made quick work of his singles opponent, as well. The sophomore blasted Bisnow 6-2, 6-0, improving to 3-4 on the season.

Hanus got back on track in singles competition by gutting out a tough win against Wisconsin's top player, Alex Kasarov. Hanus won a first-set tiebreaker before winning 6-4 in the second set to improve his season mark to 4-2.

The 'Cats are next in action against sixth-ranked Mississippi Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Combe Tennis Center.
