Wildcats Go 6-0 in Day 1 of NU Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's fencing team went 6-0 in Day 1 of the NU Duals hosted by Northwestern at the Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center on NU's campus. In the Wildcats' six matches, the team went a combined 122-40 with close matches vs. Stanford and UC San Diego.
In round one vs. Cleveland State the Wildcats won 25-2. The sabre team went 8-2, while foil was 8-1 and the epée team was a perfect 9-0. Freshman Sam Nemecek won her two foil bouts 10-0 and Sharon Sullivan won her three epée bouts 15-4.
In round two against UCSD, NU won 17-10. The sabre team was 6-3, foil 7-2 and epée 4-5. Emily Pasternak went 10-5 in two sabre bouts while captain Christina Wang was 15-6 in foil. Courtney DuBois won two of her bouts (13-12 total score) in epee. USCD won the first five bouts of the match 25-12 before losing the last four 20-12.
Round three saw NU defeat USAF 22-5. The sabre team won 9-0, foil 8-1 and epée 5-4. Pasternak was undefeated (15-0) in sabre. Jessica Florendo went 15-3 in foil and Sara Pecherek won all three of her bouts (15-9 total).
Round four was Northwestern's closest match of the day, defeating Stanford 16-11. The sabre team lost 4-5, while NU's foil team was the real strength of the dual, winning 9-0. The epée team lost 3-6. Mai Vu won two of her three bouts with a 13-9 total score in sabre. Sullivan had two of NU's three wins in epee (her only loss was 5-4 to Brittany Leader). Wang won all three of her foil bouts (15-3 total).
In round five the Wildcats defeated North Carolina 18-9. The sabre team lost 4-5 while foil (9-0) and epée (5-4) both won. Sullivan had three of the 'Cats five epée wins. Adrienne Shon had two of NU's four wins in sabre and Nemecek went 15-4 in foil.
Northwestern's sixth and final match of the day turned out to be the biggest win of Day 1. NU defeated Michigan State 26-1. Both the sabre and foil teams were a perfect 9-0, while the epée team was 8-1. In epée, freshman Megan Ross won both her bouts (10-6 total score).
The Wildcats wrap up the NU Duals tomorrow. The matches begin at 8 a.m.
