EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern hosted the Burton Open Friday, Oct. 8, at Patten Gym. Several Wildcats turned in impressive performances.
The Burton Open was open to the public and the women fenced unattached to the men's division.
Northwestern claimed the top three spots in the women's foil for the second straight year, with junior Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) taking first place. Sophomore Natalie Wang (Milipitas, Calif./Presentation) finished second and senior Christina Wang (Milipitas, Calif./Presentation) took third. Newcomer Julia Fang (Chino, Calif./Walnut) also competed in the foil division.
In the women's sabre Adrienne Shon and Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) tied for third while local resident Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) finished fifth. Senior Morgan Engling (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque) finished seventh.
In the open women's epée category, seven different Wildcats competed. Four of those seven finished in the top five with Kellie Fry (Gladstone, N.J./Bernardsville) and Sarah Gravlee (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) tying for third. Sophomore Gabby Aiuto (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) and junior Courtney DuBois (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) tied for fifth. Freshman Sofia Long (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) recorded an eighth-place finish while Anastasia Usova (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Gymnasium #115) finished 11th. Junior Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) rounded out the Wildcat contingent with a 14th-place finish.
In the mixed epée division, Long had an impressive showing, finishing 21st, while DuBois finished 30th and Usova finished 39th.
In the mixed foil category, assistant coach Ed Kaihatsu finished in a tie for third
Carly Wells - a former NU All-American - tied for 10th in the mixed sabre division.
The Northwestern fencing team is next in action when they host the USFA Remenyik at NU's Sports and Aquatic Center on Saturday October 22-23.
