Wildcats Fall to Conference Foe Penn State, 4-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team fell to conference foe Penn State Friday, 4-1. The Wildcats scored late, but couldn't catch up to the Nittany Lions in the end. Junior Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) scored his first goal of the season in the match.
Penn State got on the board first by scoring on a free kick just over 15 minutes into the match.
The Wildcats held Penn State to only five first-half shots, but went into the break down 1-0.
The Nittany Lions scored twice early in the second half to give Penn State a 3-1 lead.
Never out, the Wildcats kept up the pressure on the offensive end, including five second-half shots-on-goal.
At 77:37, Alvarez knocked home his first goal of the season, bringing Northwestern within two.
Penn State scored once more before the end of the match, however, giving the Nittany Lions a 4-1 win.
Statistically, Northwestern outplayed Penn State, outshooting the Nittany Lions 12-10, while taking the advantage in corner kicks, 8-6.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 6-4 on the season, 1-2 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats will be back in action at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9 against Princeton.
