Wildcats Have Successful Weekend at Remenyik Open

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's fencing team hosted the Remenyik Open at NU's Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC) this weekend. It was the Wildcats' second home tournament of the 2005-06 season.

Freshman Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) was NU's top finisher on the weekend, taking home first-place honors in the women's foil division. She beat out teammate Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) for top honors as Florendo finished second. Senior Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) finished 13th and freshman Julia Fang (Chino, Calif./Walnut) was 40th.

In the women's sabre division, three Wildcats finished in the top 10, led by senior Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) who placed fifth. Sophomore Gina Annunziato (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) was eighth and junior Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) finished 10th. Freshman Adrienne Shon (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School) just missed the top 10, with a 12th place finish, while Morgan Engling (Iowa City, Iowa/Dubuque) finished 19th.

In mixed sabre, Annunziato placed 31st competing against both men and women.

Senior Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) finished with an impressive second place finish in the women's epée category. Junior Courtney DuBois (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) also ended the day in the top 10, placing 10th. Sophomore Gabrielle Aiuto (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) placed 12th, while Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) was 13th and Kellie Fry (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) was 14th. Junior Sarah Gravlee (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was next, placing 15th. Senior Anastasia Usova (Hawthorn, Ill./Gymnasium #115--Omsk, Russia) rounded out the Wildcat contingent, placing 35th.

Competing in the men's epée category, Sullivan finished 35th, and DuBois 56th.

NU is next in action when they host an alumni meet this Friday at Patten Gym.
