KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Northwestern turned in its best round of the three-day Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships and finished its fall on a strong note, placing seventh in the 14-team event.
Facing a strong field, the Wildcats fired an 11-over 295 on Sunday and moved from 13th to seventh. Northwestern, ranked 49th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, finished just five strokes back of 23rd-ranked Michigan State. Fourth-ranked Georgia edged sixth-ranked Purdue, the Big Ten's top-ranked club, by three strokes to win this year's team title. Arkansas' Amanda McCurdy won the individual crown with an even-par 213.
Junior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and sophomore Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) continued their strong weekend play and both fired 2-over 73's for the third round. Kim and Trachok finished with 13-over 226's and in 18th place.
Sophomore Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) placed 39th with an 18-over 231 while freshman Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) and junior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) were 43rd with 19-over 232's.
