KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After the first day of competition, Northwestern is in 12th place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships, which are being held at Cherokee Country Club and hosted by the University of Tennessee.

The Wildcats, who are poised to move up several spots if they can produce a better team round on Saturday, received a pair of 6-over 77's and a pair of 7-over 78's for their 26-over 310 team score on Friday.

Freshman Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) and Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) both fired 77's on Friday (33rd place), while junior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif/Brentwood) and sophomore Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) carded 78's (40th place). Sophomore Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) finished at 8-over and is in 50th.

The Wildcats, who are 22 strokes behind first-day leader Purdue, are in front of Ohio State, the defending Mercedes-Benz champion and Alabama.

Second-round action begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
