EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern defeated the College of Charleston, 4-0, Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, earning first place in its own Adidas North Shore Classic.

All four teams in the tournament -- Butler, Iona, CofC and Northwestern -- finished 1-1, but the Wildcats earned the victory on goal differential following their four-goal outburst against the Cougars.

The College of Charleston took second place, while Iona finished third and Butler rounded out the field in fourth.

In a game in which the Cougars controlled much of the play, it was Northwestern that was able to put the ball in the net. Charleston outshot the Wildcats, 17-9.

Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Freshman David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) doubled back to collect a ball, then sprung Kevin Earnest (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) up the touchline, where he served a perfect ball into Alvarez who headed it home.

"We matched up well with them," NU head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Our job was to stop them from getting great chances and to use our organization to get good counterattacks."

Thirteen minutes later, Earnest went on another run and was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick that Eric Brin (Westlake, Calif./Westlake) put home to make it 2-0 at the half.

"Once we had two goals on them, they had to open up more," Lenahan said. "The score was not indicative of the play. They had most of the play and we were able to score while they were pressing."

Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) added NU's third goal in the 63rd minute off a set piece service from Brin and Alvarez scored the final goal on a laser beam to the upper corner in the 69th minute. Roth earned the assist on Alvarez's second goal.

Alvarez earned tournament MVP honors.

"It is good to bounce back from a tough loss and beat a good team," Lenahan said.

In the day's first match, Iona defeated Butler, 1-0. In a game featuring three red cards, Iona's Paul Racines scored in the fourth minute of play and the Gaels held on to win.

The Wildcats return to action next weekend when they host DePaul, UC Irvine and UW-Green Bay in the Best Western Lakeside Classic beginning at noon Friday, Sept. 10.
