EVANSTON, Ill. -- Butler scored an early goal and was able to protect it against a resilient Northwestern attack to beat the Wildcats, 1-0, Saturday in the Adidas North Shore Classic at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 17th minute when Scott Olson took a cross from the right side at the near post and put it past NU (1-1-0) keeper Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven).
"We played as hard as we could," Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. "The first 10 or 15 minutes they had the run of play and they snuck one by us."
The Wildcats had chances to score, outshooting Butler 11-5, but were unable to convert. Freshman David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) had perhaps the two best opportunities, putting a shot off the post in the first half and then having a sure goal cleared off the line by the Bulldogs' David Wyrick with 15 minutes to play.
In the 68th minute, Butler (1-1-0) goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt earned a red card, but NU could not capitalize on the man advantage.
"Butler is a veteran team," Lenahan said. "They defended like warriors with 10 men."
With less than a minute to play in the game, Will Nicholas (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) drove a diving header on goal, but right into the waiting arms of Butler backup keeper Frank Peabody.
The College of Charleston defeated Iona, 2-1, in overtime in the day's first match. Tony Myers scored both goals for the Cougars (1-0-0). Bryan Oelkers netted the Gaels (0-1-0) only score of the game.
The North Shore Classic concludes tomorrow, Sept. 5, with Butler and Iona squaring off at noon while Northwestern will face Charleston at 2:30 p.m.
