PROVO, Utah - In a match that was end-to-end most of the way and provided plenty of second-half fireworks, Northwestern fought back twice from deficits but fell in overtime to Brigham Young, 3-2.
Both teams are now 1-2 on the season.
"I thought we were a little flat in the first half tonight, but we picked up the intensity and got better as the match went on," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "It was a hard-fought game that was end line to end line."
BYU drew first blood just 49 seconds into the second half when Jamie Rendich headed home a cross from Bobbi Tillotson, and that goal stood for nearly 30 minutes before Wildcat senior Ashleigh Garmon netted her first of the season off a pass from Kelsey Hans.
The Cougars regained the lead in the 83rd minute when Tillotson converted a cross from Rendich, but once again NU had the answer when Tabitha Lowey scored on an unassisted effort for her first of the season.
The third time was not the charm, though, as BYU scored a goal that Northwestern would have no chance to equalize. Annie Zwahlen's score off a Tillotson cross would end the match, sending the 'Cats to their second OT loss of the season.
Whitney Jones had eight saves for NU, and two other shots were cleared away by Wildcat defenders. At the other end, Erika Woodbury made four stops and also had help from her defense on one occasion.
"We had quality chances tonight against a good team, and that is exciting," said Haigh. "Their goalie came up with some big-time saves. I was pleased with that, as well as the help we got from our bench tonight."
NU will remain in Provo and play Southern Utah Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site match.
