EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern got its first goal of 2004 from sophomore Katie Wright and held the play against Drake, but could not escape the Bulldogs' bite and settled for a 1-1 tie.
The result came despite the Wildcats' outshooting Drake 14-4 and holding an astounding 14-2 edge in corner kicks.
Wright's goal came on the half-hour and was the result of some nice hustle. Following a missed attempt on goal from a corner kick, defender Tori Bohannon chased down a ball on the end line and passed it out to Kelly Sitkowski who one-timed a ball back across from the right side. Both Wright and Kelsey Hans were there, and it was Wright who got her head on it to make the score 1-0
It looked like it might stay that way, as NU (5-4-1) kept the pressure up. However, with just less than 20 minutes remaining, a defensive giveaway allowed Drake (4-4-2) to penetrate deep into Wildcat territory. Melissa Nelson took advantage, rocketing a 20-yard blast from the right side that eluded a diving Whitney Jones and dented the upper far corner.
NU had two balls go off the post in the extra sessions -- Kelsey Hans fired a 20-yard missile that Drake goalkeeper Kate Stack was late on but rang the crossbar, and then a Sitkowski corner bent in and hit the post before bouncing away harmlessly.
Jones finished with one save on the day, while Stack had three stops for Drake.
Northwestern is home two more times next weekend, hosting Iowa Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and Minnesota Sunday at 1 p.m.
