EVANSTON, Ill. - In the days leading up to Friday's Big Ten match with Iowa, NU women's soccer coach Jenny Haigh spent a lot of time impressing upon her team how big this weekend was.

"I told them beforehand that this match was probably the most important one we have played to date," she said.

Consider the message received. The Wildcats scored three times before Friday's game was 21 minutes old, and they never let up in taking a 6-0 decision from the Hawkeyes at the Thomas Athletic Complex.

NU is now 6-4-1 overall and level at 2-2 in the Big Ten, while Iowa (0-7-2, 0-4-1) continues to look for its first win of 2004.

"I was pleased at the way we finished our chances early and never let up on them," said Haigh afterward. "I am proud of the way we went after them and took control."

Friday's win marked the first time in the program's 11-year history that six different women scored in the same match.

The goalfest began in the ninth minute, when a free kick from Shannon Schneeman was tipped by Kelsey Hans and flicked into the goal off the head of Tori Bohannon. Less than four minutes later, Hans herself found the back of the goal when she was sprung on a breakaway by a nice long ball from Beth Martin.

The goal was Hans' ninth of the season and allowed her to move past Christie Molitor as the program's record-holder for most goals in a season by a freshman. NU -- which has 27 goals this season after scoring just 21 all of last year -- still has eight regular-season matches to play.

"Kelsey has been a real key for us this year," said Haigh. "Last year we were a competitive team, but we had trouble scoring. This year, Kelsey has been able to flip the switch for us and get us going at that end. She is a very opportunistic player."

Ashleigh Garmon netted NU's final goal of the first half, again breaking free off a Schneeman pass in the 21st minute.

Iowa changed goalkeepers to start the second half, but the results were much the same. Less than eight minutes into the stanza, Kelly Sitkowski pummeled a rebound past Lindsey Boldt, and then in the 68th minute of the match Schneeman finished a Julie Lipinski cross with an open header into the side netting.

Freshman Caitlin Carr closed out the scoring with 11:15 left on the clock, easily finishing a one-time ball from classmate Danielle Iordanou. The goal was significant because it was Carr's first as a collegian, while Iordanou's assist came on her first collegiate touch.

The last time Northwestern scored six goals in a match was Oct. 28, 2001 against IPFW; the last time it happened in a Big Ten game was Oct. 17, 1997 (a 7-0 win over Ohio State).

Northwestern is back in action Sunday, hosting Minnesota at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Athletic Complex in another Big Ten match.
