EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In just its second tournament of the fall season, the Northwestern women's golf team looks to be in mid-season form at Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational. The Wildcats shot a two-round total of 615 Saturday and sit in fourth place, just six strokes off the lead held by the University of Michigan. The final round will be played Sunday.
After posting a 22-over 310 in the first round, only Michigan was better in the second round as the 'Cats shot a 17-over 305. Also in the 15-team field are Big Ten teams Michigan State (612), the University of Wisconsin (613) and Indiana University (633). Michigan State is the Mary Fossum Invitational defending champion.
Northwestern has three golfers in the top-15. For the second weekend in a row, the 'Cats are paced by a freshman. In the second round, Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) made four birdies en route to a 1-over 73. She stands alone in sixth place at 8-over 152 (79-73).
Although they are not related, sophomore Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and senior Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) had very similar days. Both are tied for 13th at 10-over 154 following rounds of 76 and 78. Alice Kim shot 76-78 and Ina Kim shot 78-76.
Sophomore Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Grand Rapids Christian) is 31st at 14-over 158 (80-78). Freshman Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who led the 'Cats last week, is one stroke back in 35th after rounds of 77 and 82.
The final round tees off Sunday at 9 a.m. (8 CDT).
