EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a sloppy first half that saw the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay take a 1-0 lead, Northwestern rattled off four second-half goals to take down the Phoenix, 4-1, Friday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex during the first day of the Lakeside Classic.
Gerardo Alvarez (Aurura, Ill./Marmion Academy) scored twice while Will Nicholas (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) netted one goal and had three assists. Freshman David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) also contributed three assists for the Wildcats.
Trailing 1-0 coming out of halftime, Alvarez equalized just over a minute into the second half. Clark Kiesling (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) pushed a ball into the middle that Nicholas headed over to Alvarez for the easy goal.
Sophomore Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) netted what would prove to be the game winner five minutes later on assists from Nicholas and Roth.
The playmaking combination of Nicholas and Roth again sprung Alvarez in the 56th minute to put the Wildcats up, 3-1.
"Will's workrate is just unbelievable," NU head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Gerardo showed again today why he is one of the best players in the country."
After assisting on the first three NU tallies, Nicholas put a goal of his own home in the 76th minute after collecting a nifty ball from Roth.
NU (3-1) outshot the Phoenix, 6-1, in the second half, but it was UW-Green Bay which got the better of the play in the first half.
Michael Lepera scored in the 15th minute to give the Phoenix the lead. UW-Green Bay outshot NU 8-6 and outcornered the Wildcats 4-0 in the half.
NU narrowly escaped another Phoenix (2-1) goal when Dave Chin rocked a shot off the crossbar. The rebound came out to Kyle Sillars, who shot on an open goal, but NU captain Jaro Pylypczak (Lombard, Ill./Benet Academy) was there to clear it out of harms way.
"We came out flat in the first half and were lucky to get out of it just one goal down," Lenahan said. "Clark Kiesling, Jeff Mills and Sammy Semwangu came off the bench and gave us some great minutes in the second half."
In the Lakeside Classic's first match, UC Irvine defeated DePaul, 2-0. Chris Klotz and Anthony Hamilton both scored second-half goals for the Anteaters (1-2).
The Lakeside Classic will conclude Sunday with UC Irvine facing UW-Green Bay in the first game scheduled for 2 p.m. Northwestern will then take on DePaul (1-2-1) at approximately 4 p.m.
