EVANSTON, Ill. - Quite simply, Northwestern's 5-1 win over Colorado College in women's soccer Sunday could be summed up with one statement.

Shannon Schneeman could not be stopped.

The sophomore midfielder scored a school-record four goals -- two in each half -- to lead a Wildcat onslaught that began early and did not finish until the match's final minute

Schneeman's showed a wide range of skill on her goals, leading to Northwestern's best offensive showing as a team since a 6-0 win over IPFW on October 28, 2001.

"Shannon is definitely a leader for this team," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh following the match. "She deserved everything she got out there today -- she works so hard and competes for everything. It was nice to see her get some opportunities and make the most of them."

The Schneeman Show started quickly. In just the seventh minute, she blasted a free kick from 25 yards out that skipped over the CC wall and went into the upper right-hand corner. She then tallied what would be the match-winner in the 32nd minute, beating a Tiger defender to a Katie Gunderson cross and one-timing the ball inside the post beyond CC goalkeeper Meghann Loseke.

Schneeman got the hat trick at the 57:56 mark when she headed home a short cross from the left side by Tabitha Lowey.

Freshman Kelsey Hans -- a former club teammate of Schneeman's -- scored for the second time in as many collegiate games, taking a nice feed from Julie Lipinski and pushing a left-footed effort back across Loseke's body and into the goal. That goal came in the 88th minute, and just 1:10 later Schneeman capped off her day with the record-breaking goal, finishing a cross from Lipinski that was set up by a nice touch from Stephanie Krutsch.

NU was in control of this match most of the way, utilizing a distinct wind advantage in the first half to outshoot Colorado College 8-0 and score those first two goals. The match was more even in the second half -- NU had just an 8-7 shot edge -- and Colorado College was able to get on the board with mere seconds remaining when Amara Wilson pushed home an unassisted tally to NU goalkeeper Anne Helm's right side.

Helm came on for the final 11 minutes of the match to replace Whitney Jones, who made two saves including a nice parry on a free kick from Katlin Okamoto. At the other end, Loseke had four first-half saves and five total.

"I am very pleased with our play today," said Haigh. "We created good chances and finished them. Their keeper made some saves early but we didn't get down, we kept after them and we were rewarded."

NU is on the road next weekend, taking on Brigham Young Thursday night and Southern Utah Saturday afternoon. Both matches will take place in Provo, Utah.
