SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Northwestern fell to Notre Dame 2-0 in its opening exhibition contest of the season Monday night in South Bend.

Notre Dame jumped on top quickly with a goal at the 10:52 mark of the first half, then followed with its second score 10 minutes later.

"Our guys took a little while to get their legs under them," NU head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We haven't played a game at that speed since the spring and it took some time to adjust."

The Irish controlled most of the play during the game, but the Wildcats were able to build some nice scoring opportunities while holding ND scoreless after its initial barrage.

Notre Dame, preseason ranked 14th in the country by collegesoccernews.com, outshot NU 19-9 in the contest and held an 8-4 advantage in corners. Will Nicholas, Clark Kiesling and reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Gerardo Alvarez led Northwestern with two shots apiece.

"Notre Dame is one of the better teams we will play this season," Lenahan said. "We know we need to play the best to become the best."

The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday with an exhibition match at Saint Louis before opening the regular season at home Wednesday, Sept. 1, against IPFW in a 4 p.m. contest.
