EVANSTON, Ill. -- Maureen Connelly, formerly an assistant field hockey coach at Simmons College (Mass.), was recently named an assistant coach at Northwestern by Wildcat head coach Kelly McCollum. At NU, Connelly will work with all aspects of the program.

"She is a young, energetic coach ready to learn," said McCollum. "Our staff is committed to developing Maureen as a successful coach and exposing her to important program areas like recruiting, player development, video analysis, scouting and more. We are excited to welcome her to our staff."

Connelly spent last season at Simmons College, following her 2003 graduation from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. While at Simmons, Connelly created and implemented daily practice schedules, as well as coordinated the team's offense. She also developed an offensive corner unit that helped the Sharks to an 11-7 record and a trip to the conference championship game--a big improvement following a 9-8 2002 season.

While a student-athlete at Northeastern, Connelly was involved in numerous field hockey camps. She served as a head coach for the Elite Field Hockey Camp (1999-2003) in Waltham, Mass., as well as the under-18 Seacoast Field Hockey Association that competed in the National Hockey Festival in Palm Springs, Calif.

Connelly worked as a site coach for the United States Field Hockey Association, coaching the under-16 squad at the National Futures Tournament.

While receiving her bachelor of science degree in human services, Connelly student-taught at a third grade class to earn her certification in elementary education.

As a student-athlete, Connelly earned four varsity letters, playing a crucial role in leading the Huskies to two-straight America East Conference regular-season championships and back-to-back tournament titles. NU competed in two NCAA tournaments, earning a first-round win over Connecticut in 2002. Connelly was a second-team Northeast Region All-America in 2001.

In the classroom, Connelly was a four-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and a four-time Northeastern Scholar Student Athlete Award winner. She also received the Excellence in Internship Award in Human Services for her work in the psychiatric unit of the Children's Hospital in Boston.
