IOWA CITY, Iowa - After Friday's game was rained out in Iowa City, the Northwestern baseball team dropped the first game of a rescheduled Saturday doubleheader, 3-0. Iowa right-hander Nathan Johnson shut down the Wildcats offense, giving up eight hits in his third straight complete game. Wildcat starter Dan Brauer struck out eight in his first complete game of the season.

With both pitchers cruising through the first six innings, Iowa's Mike Best hit a 0-1 change up over the center field fence, giving the home team a 1-0 lead. Up until that point, Brauer had given up just three hits, while striking out five.

Iowa's pitcher, Johnson, was just as impressive. The senior struck out four and walked one to match Brauer in the first six innings.

Following the home run, Brauer hit a batter, gave up a single, recorded an out, and intentionally walked a runner, all of which loaded the bases. Iowa designated hitter Jim Reid followed with a two-RBI single to left field, giving the Hawkeyes a 3-0 lead.

That's all Hawkeye starter, Johnson, would need. The senior gave up eight hits, struck out five and improved to 5-2 on the year.

In the loss, Brauer threw his first complete game of the season, giving up the three runs, and striking out eight. He falls to 4-4 on the year, and has 80 strikeouts in 70.1 innings pitched.

Northwestern squandered early scoring opportunities, leaving runners stranded in scoring position in each of the first three innings.

Northwestern also threatened in the ninth, leaving the bases loaded. In all, the Wildcats left 11 runners on base, compared to seven for Iowa.
