CHICAGO - Playing its first midweek game in two weeks, Northwestern traveled 15 miles south to downtown Chicago to take on Illinois-Chicago and lost 9-3. Senior Jason Krynski hit two doubles and Anthony Wycklendt drove in all three Wildcat runs. Northwestern falls to 22-23-1 on the season. UIC improves to 32-15.
Northwestern squandered an early scoring opportunity, leaving a second inning leadoff double by Jason Krynski stranded at second. Krynski laced his 13th double of the season to the right center field wall, but three fly outs followed ending the inning.
Illinois-Chicago found the scoring column first, plating two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Wildcat starter Dan Konecny walked the leadoff hitter before giving up a single and uncorking a wild pitch. The errant pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. Two groundball outs allowed the runners to cross the plate.
The Wildcats left another runner in scoring position in the top of the third inning. This time Chris Hayes was left stranded after he hit a one-out double down the left field line. A strikeout and an infield pop out ended the inning.
Freshman Ryan Myers relieved Konecny to start the third inning, giving up a leadoff home run to Flames catcher Mike Hughes. It was Hughes' 12th round-tripper of the season. Myers got a groundball and two fly outs, with a walk sandwiched between the fly balls, to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, catcher Dan Pohlman led off the inning with a line-drive single to left field. Looking like an instant replay, Krynski lined his second double of the game to the right center field gap, moving Pohlman to third. After a strikeout, left fielder Anthony Wycklendt hit a ground ball single up the middle, scoring Pohlman and Krynski. Junior Mike Phelps flied out to the wall in right field and Wycklendt was caught stealing to end the inning.
After throwing a perfect fourth inning and getting the first two outs in the fifth, Myers was lifted for Chris Davidson. With a runner on first via a Myers hit-by-pitch, Davidson got a ground ball to end the inning.
NU threatened in the top of the sixth, stranding a runner on third. With one out, Krynski was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Dan Brauer's single to left field. He then moved to third when Wycklendt hit a towering fly ball to deep right center field, but got no further. A groundball back to the pitcher ended the inning.
Davidson induced a ground ball for the first out of the inning as head coach Paul Stevens called on freshman Caleb Fields to take over on the mound. Fields gave up a double and an infield single, before balking a run home. After a throwing error moved the runner to third, Fields gave up a double, making the score 5-2 in favor of Illinois-Chicago.
Stevens called on Julio Siberio to close the door. Unfortunately for NU, Siberio gave up a hustling double and a triple off the center field wall. The two hits made the score 7-2 UIC.
The Wildcats made a change in the bottom of the seventh inning, moving the catcher, Pohlman, to the mound and bringing in freshman Geoff Dietz to catch.
Pohlman had the same luck as the rest of the NU staff, giving up one run on two hits.
After seven complete innings, Illinois-Chicago led 8-2.
The Flames weren't done, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth inning off freshman Andrew Smith. Smith was the seventh pitcher used by the Wildcats in the game.
Wycklendt hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning, making the final score 9-3 UIC. It was Wycklendt's fifth home run of the season.
NU is next in action when it travels to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a four-game conference series. Game one of the series begins at 5:35 p.m. May 14 at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium.
