PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team defeated Stanford, 11-5, Friday night at the Cardinal's Maloney Field. The 13th-ranked Wildcats improved to 8-1 and have won seven straight, while 19th-ranked Stanford fell to 7-5 and had a four-game win streak snapped with the loss.
It marked the second straight game NU had a superb defensive effort; last Sunday, the 'Cats held UConn to just four goals in an 18-4 victory. The catalyst was junior goalkeeper Ashley Gersuk, who made 14 saves on the night.
Lindsay Finocchiaro and Kristen Kjellman, a pair of freshmen, led the offensive attack with three goals and one assist apiece. Laura Glassanos added two goals and an assist, while Sarah Albrecht, Lindsey Munday and Angela McMahon also scored goals.
The Wildcats got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Finocchiaro just 3:09 into the contest. Following another Northwestern goal, Stanford cut the Wildcats' lead to one with a goal by sophomore Megan Burker with 20:51 remaining in the first half. Northwestern extended its lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 15:53 mark, but the Cardinal answered back. However, the Wildcats scored three of the next four goals and entered the halftime break with a 6-3 advantage.
Northwestern then essentially ended the contest by reeling off four straight goals to start the second half and push its lead to 10-3. Stanford got its first goal of the second period from sophomore Nyerr Parham with 11:56 remaining in the game. Northwestern added two more goals before Stanford capped the scoring with 2:11 remaining in the contest.
NU remains on the west coast for one more game this weekend, taking on Cal Sunday at noon (2 p.m. Central).
