IOWA CITY, IOWA--With over half of its Big Ten schedule complete, Northwestern's 42nd-ranked men's tennis team sits pretty after a 5-2 drubbing of Iowa at Klotz Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats got back on track after a split last weekend to improve to 13-5, including 4-2 in conference play. They now sit in fourth place in the Big Ten, trailing only Illinois, Ohio State and Minnesota.
"I am happy we were able to bounce back after a tough loss (to Illinois) last weekend," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "We just need to keep up our efforts in our remaining matches."
The Hawkeyes (3-12, 0-6) did not fare well in doubles, as NU swept all three matches for the point. Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) had a big win at No. 3, where they rallied from being down 4-1 to beat Aaron Schaechterle and Matis Jasicek 8-4.
Lock also added a win at No. 3 singles, taking down Walter Valarezo 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) knocked down Chaitu Malempati 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) pounded Schaechterle 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5.
Wahla's opponent, Aaron, is the twin brother of Northwestern's Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine). The two still have not competed against each other in collegiate action, as they did not meet this afternoon. Instead, Adam beat Jonny Hoak 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.
"It was a good win," said Torricelli. "We hope to carry this momentum into next week's road matches."
The Wildcats will take on Ohio State April 16 in Columbus, Ohio and Penn State April 18 in State College, Pa.
