Wildcats Selected for NCAA Central Regional

EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the fourth time in the last five years, Northwestern's women's golf team gets a chance to compete for the NCAA Division I national championship.
The Wildcats, ranked 43rd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, are one of 63 teams that were invited to this year's championships, which begin Thursday, May 6. Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 6-8 to determine the national championships field. Northwestern is one of 21 teams competing in the Central Regional, which is being hosted by Illinois State University (University Golf Course) in Normal.
The top eight teams and top two individuals from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 18-21 at Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala. (Auburn University is the host). Northwestern is seeded 17th among the 21 teams in the Central Regional.
"This is the start of a new season for us and we're excited to return to the NCAA tournament," said Northwestern coach Chris Regenberg. "We have a young team that will relish this opportunity."
Three other Big Ten teams were selected to play in the NCAA Central Regional: Michigan State (No. 6 seed), Indiana (No. 13 seed) and Purdue (No. 16 seed). Also included in the Central Regional field is defending national champion USC and two-time former NCAA champion Arizona. Ohio State, the Big Ten champion, was shipped to the NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif., where it is seeded No. 2.
The Wildcats, who have three freshmen in their lineup, are led by a pair of rookies, Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) and 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood). Robb and Kim have respective scoring averages of 77.41 and 77.56.
Northwestern made NCAA appearances in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The 2000 team advanced to the NCAA National Championships.
