EVANSTON, Ill. - Minnesota scored five runs in the first three innings and five more in the eighth, defeating the Northwestern baseball team, 12-3, Sunday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. The Wildcats scored three runs of their own in the first two innings, but were unable to hold on to the lead. With the loss, NU falls to 16-19-1 overall, 6-10 in the Big Ten. The Gophers improved to 21-15, 10-6.

Northwestern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Dan Pohlman hit his fourth sacrifice fly of the season. Center fielder Matt Brimmer scored from third on the play. Brimmer was issued a one-out walk and went to third on a Mark Ori single to left field. Pohlman followed with a towering fly ball to deep center field, scoring NU's first run.

Minnesota plated two runs in the top of the second inning, as a pair doubles came around to score. The Gophers had three hits inning.

NU scored two more in the second inning as Jason Krynski hit a solo home run to start the inning. It was Krynski's sixth long ball of the season. Sophomore left fielder Anthony Wycklendt followed with a hard ground ball single up the middle and moved to second on Josh Lieberman's one-out sacrifice bunt. A pitch hit Brimmer, putting runners on first and second with two outs. A wild pitch moved the runners up 90-feet, which was quickly followed by a balk, scoring Wycklendt from third.

The Gophers plated three more runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 5-3 lead.

The score would remain 5-3, until Gopher first baseman Andy Hunter hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the seventh inning.

Minnesota would go on to score five more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to secure the victory.

Freshman George Kontos started on the mound for the Wildcats, throwing seven-plus innings. He struck out four in his fifth start of the season.

Freshmen Ryan Myers relieved Kontos after two batters reached base in the eighth inning. Myers threw just one-third of an inning, giving up two inherited runners and three of his own. Freshman Andrew Smith took over for Myers with just one out gone in the eighth inning. Smith inherited two runners (both scored) in the eighth, as the Kentucky native pitched for the first time since being sidelined with mono. He threw one an two-third innings, striking out two.

NU is next in action when they host Wis.-Milwaukee at Rocky Miller Park this Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. (CDT)
