EVANSTON, Ill. - Minnesota scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, defeating the Northwestern baseball team 9-1 Friday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. The Wildcats scored one unearned run, as Minnesota starter Glen Perkins shut down the NU offense. Senior Dan Pohlman and sophomore Mark Ori each had two hits in the loss.

In a highly anticipated match up between two of the Big Ten's best pitchers, Wildcat J.A. Happ and the Gophers Perkins, Minnesota pounded out 13 hits to NU's five. Happ pitched five complete innings in his shortest outing of the season. He did strike out six in the contest.

Perkins, who has never lost a regular season Big Ten game in his career, pitched eight complete innings, giving up four hits and the one unearned run. He struck out eight in the ball game.

NU's lone run came in the fourth inning when Josh Lieberman led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a passed ball. Junior Doug Beatty laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Lieberman to third. Senior Jason Krynski followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Lieberman from third.

The Gophers plated two runs in the first, one in the third and three more in the fifth to put the game away. Minnesota scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

In all, NU used five pitchers on the day, falling to 15-17-1 overall, and 5-8 in the Big Ten. Minnesota improved to 20-14, 8-5.

NU and Minnesota are back in action, tomorrow, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (CDT).
