EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman Kristen Kjellman was named to the insidelacrosse.com National Honor Roll. It marked the second time in three weeks the Wildcat freshman has been so honored.
The recognition came on the heels of another stellar offensive performance over the weekend by the former Massachusetts Player of the Year. Kjellman scored five goals -- including four in the second half -- as 11th-ranked Northwestern overcame a 6-1 deficit to defeat No. 18 Penn State, 13-11, Saturday afternoon in State College, Pa. Kjellman's final two goals came with less than three minutes to play, breaking a 10-10 tie and sending the 'Cats on to the victory.
Following a 9-5 win Tuesday against No. 6 Notre Dame -- in which Kjellman had three more goals to lead all scorers -- Northwestern (11-1, 3-0 ALC) has won 10 games in a row. That is a school record, and tied with Maryland for the second-longest win streak in the country behind No. 1 Princeton (22).
Kjellman was one of six players named to the National Honor Roll by insidelacrosse.com; the National Player of the Week was Katie Leland from the University of New Hampshire.
Kjellman has scored 36 goals this season, which is a high for a Northwestern player since the program was brought back to varsity status in 2002. She also has nine assists for a total of 45 points, which leads the team and is the most in the modern era -- junior Sarah Albrecht had 42 points as a freshman in 2002.
Northwestern is ranked 11th in the IWLCA national coaches poll for the second straight week, its highest ranking since the program was brought back to varsity status. The Wildcats are also ranked in the insidelacrosse.com National Power Poll (13) and by womenslacrosse.com (14).
The Wildcats are at home again this weekend, hosting No. 9 Johns Hopkins Sunday in a showdown between the only undefeated teams left in the American Lacrosse Conference -- the Blue Jays are 4-0, while the 'Cats are 3-0. This year, for the first time in the three-year history of the league, the regular-season champion will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament field.
