EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Dan Konecny threw his first complete game of the season, as Northwestern defeated Purdue 3-1 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Konecny struck out four in the seven-inning game, improving to 3-5 on the season. He allowed just four hits in the game. NU improved to 15-14-1 overall, 5-5 in the Big Ten.
NU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Mark Ori laced a bases-loaded single up the middle scoring Josh Lieberman and Dan Pohlman. Lieberman singled to lead off the game and Pohlman reached on a fielder's choice. A Jon Mikrut walk loaded the bases.
Neither team found the scoring column until the Wildcats plated a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mikrut hit a slow roller to second base, which scored Jason Krynski from third base. Krynski reached on a Purdue error as his pop-up to the catcher was misplayed. Krynski moved from first to third on two wild pitches.
Purdue got that run back in the top of the sixth as designated hitter John Hunter hit a solo home run to right center field.
Offensively, Caleb Fields was the only Wildcat to have multiple hits, ending the game 2-for-3 with two singles. Ori had two RBI, giving him 14 on the season.
