EVANSTON, Ill. - The Purdue Boilermakers scored three runs in the third and fifth innings, as Northwestern could not mount a comeback, losing game two of Saturday's doubleheader 9-3. NU managed just six hits in the seven-inning contest, falling to 15-15-1 overall, 5-6 in the Big Ten. Senior catcher Dan Pohlman hit his sixth home run of the season in the loss.

Like they did in game one, NU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Dan Pohlman hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Brimmer scored on Pohlman's hit, reaching base on a fielder's choice. Brimmer went to third on Jason Krynski's single to right field.

The lead did not last long as Purdue put up a three spot in the top of the third inning off Wildcat starter Dan Brauer. A lead off hit-by-pitch and an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt put runners on first and second with no outs. After a fly out, a single plated the first run, followed by a safety squeeze to put Purdue up 2-1. A double down the right field line plated the final Boilermaker run of the inning.

The Wildcats got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Anthony Wycklendt hit a towering triple that tipped off the diving Purdue centerfielder's glove in right centerfield. First baseman Mark Ori scored from first base on the hit. Ori hit a two-out single to left field in his at bat. It was Wycklendt's team-leading fourth triple of the season.

Boilermaker third baseman Simon Klink hit a three-run home run over the left centerfield wall in the top of the fifth inning, giving Purdue a 6-2 lead. A hit batsman and a single put the two runners on, setting up Klink's long ball.

Junior Evan Blesoff relieved Brauer to start the sixth inning, running into trouble from the start. After a leadoff walk, Blesoff got a pop up in foul territory for the first out, before giving up single. The hit put runners on first and third with one out. An attempted safety squeeze was foiled by first baseman Mark Ori as he flipped the slow roller to Pohlman at home plate for the second out. A single followed, scoring an insurance run for Purdue. Junior left-hander Chris Davidson relieved Blesoff, getting a fly ball to end the Boilermaker threat.

Brauer threw five compete innings, striking out seven, falling to 3-3 on the season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Pohlman hit an opposite field solo home run over the right field fence, bringing the score to 7-3 in favor of Purdue.

Purdue answered with two runs of its own the in the top of the seventh inning, making the score 9-3.

Offensively for NU, Pohlman had two RBI in the contest, giving him 23 on the season, 11 of which have come in Big Ten action.

NU and Purdue wrap up the four-game series, tomorrow, at 1 p.m. (CDT) at NU's Rocky Miller Park.
