EVANSTON, Ill. -- Before traveling to Ohio State University next week for the 2004 Big Ten Championships, Northwestern plays one final tuneup event -- the Lady Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. The tournament runs Saturday and Sunday, with 36 holes on Saturday (8 a.m. shotgun start) and 18 on Sunday (8 a.m. start).
For Northwestern, the tournament is important for a couple reasons. First, the Wildcats' last event was March 23 -- nearly a month ago. Second, Northwestern is competing against eight Big Ten opponents this weekend.
"There's no question that a good weekend would give us some momentum going into the Big Ten tournament," says head coach Chris Regenberg. "We're coming off a tough tournament -- one with a highly competitive field and one that was played on a difficult golf course. But that was several weeks ago and now we've had some time to make some adjustments in our game and get some focus back on the task at hand."
Nine of the eleven Big Ten schools are entered in this year's Lady Boilermaker, along with 34th-ranked Texas A&M, 36th-ranked Kent State and 58th-ranked Notre Dame. The only two Big Ten schools missing from the tournament are third-ranked Ohio State and 80th-ranked Penn State.
Northwestern is ranked 41st in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index. Michigan State is the highest ranked team (18th) in this weekend's field.
Freshmen Alice Kim and Kelly Robb lead the Wildcats in scoring average with identical 77.00 marks.
