STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State won its third straight game over Northwestern, winning 4-1 on a cold and rainy day. NU, which managed just six hits in the game, fell to 13-14-1 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. Senior Josh Lieberman continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-3 and recording NU's lone RBI.
Penn State scored the first run of the game when first baseman Clint Eury laced a two-out RBI double down the right field line. His double scored Mike Milliron from first base.
Wildcat pitcher Julio Siberio, making the first start of his career, gave up three runs in four and one-third innings, before giving way to junior Chris Hayes. Siberio struck out a career-high six in his longest outing of the season.
The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when Eury hit a two-RBI single to left field. Siberio issued a one-out walk and hit the next batter before balking them ahead 90 feet. Eury followed with the two-run single. However, Hayes came on and ended the threat with a groundball out and a strikeout.
Northwestern finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when Lieberman hit a two-out single to left centerfield. Lieberman's hit, his third of the game, scored Dan Brauer from third after Brauer had led off the inning with a single to left field.
PSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, as a two-out error allowed the run to cross the plate.
Junior Chris Davidson took over Hayes to start the eighth inning. Hayes ended up going two and two-third innings, giving up the one unearned run and striking out two. Davidson did the job, striking out two and inducing a ground ball in the eighth inning.
Northwestern is next in action Friday when it hosts Purdue in a four-game weekend conference series at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston. Game one is set for 3 p.m. (CDT).
