NOTRE DAME, Ind.--Foilest Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istavan Gimnazium) and sabreist Lauren Van Gieson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) each took home bronze medals as Northwestern's sixth-ranked women's fencing team concluded competition at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships.
F?ldi, who beat teammate Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) to reach the semifinal round, matched her finish at the 2003 tournament. Florendo took fifth and Christina Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) came in sixth to round out the top-10 performances of the NU foil squad.
In sabre, Van Gieson led her squad for the second-consecutive year, edging Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) and Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), who nabbed sixth and seventh, respectively.
"With the way she fenced, I think Julia picked up a lot of confidence heading into next week's Midwest Regional Championships," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "And Lauren (Van Gieson), too, fenced really well. In fact, she had to beat a lot of strong fencers just to reach third."
Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) paced the epee squad by ending up in sixth. Kelsey Nencheck (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), meanwhile, followed at seventh and Sarah Gravlee (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was eighth.

Next week, the Wildcats will play host to the Midwest Regional Championships. The one-day qualifier for the NCAA Championships will take place on March 14 at SPAC.
